Alongise the open studio route, Heden and Bermuda Open curate the group show 'Nightshift' to shed light on nightlife from various perspectives: from a collective festive event to an individual identity-defining moment. In addition to a selection of works from Heden's diverse collection, the exhibition presents work by nine artists based in The Hague. The show also highlights the night as a sanctuary for the exceptional, bizarre, and ominous, where subcultures can manifest themselves without restrictions. The artists participating in this co-production share their fascination for nightlife and reflect in a poetic and non-judgmental way on the risks that nightlife can also entail, such as addiction, crossing borders and loneliness.

This exhibition is part of The Balcony’s extramuros program, in which collaborations take place across Europe’s vast network of artist-run & presentation spaces. Occurring each year in the fall to inaugurate the new cultural season under the sign of collaboration and exchange, The Balcony has this year teamed up with a group of artists and curators originally from Paris.
'I'm a storyteller' brings together six artists from the Non-Étoile collective around the theme of childhood approached as a poetic, political, and interactive space. The works on show amplify contrasts—between the miniature and the monumental—creating a space for viewers to shift perspectives and question their own sense of scale and experience. Among the featured pieces are micro-editions, embroidered textiles, participatory games, and sculptural objects rooted in childhood memory. In addition to the exhibition, a public program offers French-language workshops and an artist talk aimed at connecting with the local French-speaking community in The Hague.

For extra_muros, a program placed under the signs of collaboration and European exchange, The Balcony is teaming up with Non-Étoile, a large Paris-based artist collective and project space, with the group show 'Tompouce meets Madeleine'. The exhibition title references traditional Dutch and French desserts, as well as the folklore characters associated with them — Tom Pouce (Tom Thumb), an adventurous child no bigger than his father’s thumb, and Madeleine, a figure whose identity as a baker has been claimed by various historical narratives. The artists in this exhibition turn to storytelling and myth-making as processes tightly woven with what we make with our hands: hands that dream of pigments, puzzles, and syrup — echoing the sensory richness of childhood. The fantastical here appears as the other side of the handmade: that which softens under the warmth of a molding palm and unfurls, full of texture.
In addition to the exhibition 'Tompouce meets Madeleine', The Balcony co-organises a panel talk at Atelier Néerlandais as a networking event and presentation of The Hague, Netherlands, and Paris' artist-run landscapes. The intention is to meet, put things in perspective, and exchange good practices. Among the speakers are representatives of French collectives: La main (Paris, association supporting the sustainability and professionalization of cultural ‘tiers-lieux’), Le Wonder (Paris, artist-run space), Non-Étoile (Paris, artist-run space); as well as Dutch organizations: Bronco (The Hague, artist-run space), The Balcony (The Hague, artist-run space), Platform BK (Amsterdam, organization supporting art workers). With speakers Laura Aufrère, Yves Bartlett, Jérôme Clément-Wilz, Arthur Cordier, Léa Guillout, Julia Piccolo, Harriet Rose Morley, Marnix van Uum, Hugo Vessiller-Fonfreide.

How does the harnessing of energy relate to cultural production? How to produce without extracting? 'Pied-à-Terre. Harnessing Energy' is the inaugural chapter of the new curatorial cycle of The Balcony, Extractive Imagination(s). Since the advent of sedentary Western civilizations, communities have transformed matter into assets through systems of extraction—harvesting crops, sifting soil, and distilling water. The speed and visibility of extraction contrast with the slowness and subtlety of its exhaust — that which is left behind, consumed and deemed useless within productive logics. The upcoming exhibitions explore extraction and consumption as intertwined processes.
